5. Imperial College London
Imperial College London tops the table for research quality, focusing on science, engineering, medicine and business at this specialist institution. 4. London School of Economics and Political Science

1. Cambridge University
First place goes to Cambridge, which has now topped the Complete University Guide League table on ten occasions, having completed nine years on nine occasions. Cambridge has 41 top-five disciplines - topping 27 in those rankings.

The university has the highest expectations of its students, with the highest admission standards of all universities. In turn, students can expect teaching influenced by the latest research, with the university making a similar top score for research intensity. University alumni include David Attenborough and Alan Turing - and the university counts 107 Nobel laureates among its alumni, academics and visiting staff.
