The Cost of Studying in Australia for domestic students
Like many other places around the world, domestic students, especially those successfully applying for a sponsored position in the Commonwealth, are less expensive to study in Australia, which is largely government subsidies. Commonwealth-funded places are available in both public and some – not all – private universities in Australia. Depending on where and what you research, the government restricts students’ donation amounts. For each of the bands, which is for 2018 A$ 0-6,444 for Bands 1, AU$0-9,185, and AU$0-10,754 for Bands 1, the Government sets the minimum range and maximum for each fee.
The domestic graduate students’ fees are similarly sorted out. Some institutions report an annual students’ fees figure. The University of Melbourne, for example, lists prices for 2019 from AUD 19,008 per year to AUD 57,088 per year for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine for a Masters of Psychiatry. Some graduate programs also offer places funded by the Commonwealth.
Domestic students are eligible to receive the High School Loan Program (HELP) as opposed to international students. Australian nationals and permanent humanitarian visa holders are given five forms of government loans.
FEE-HELP covers tuition costs for students who pay the fee for costs, SA-HELP pays for students’ facilities and fees, OSE-HELP pays some expenses of studying abroad and VET student loans are charged for vocational education and training fees. HECS-HELP is the mechanism that allows students’ sponsors by the Commonwealth to pay student contributions or for the scholarship to study in Australia.
