Top MBA Programs That Don't Require The GMAT - SOPEDITS

Professionals who think their experience speaks volumes about their management aptitude and want to skip the test entirely and applicants who think they will do better on the Graduate Record Test (GRE) rather than the Graduate Management Entrance Test (GMAT) It can be heartening to hear that most of the top MBA programs no longer only have GMAT test score requirements.


In fact, some programs do not require the submission of any test scores. The top 10 schools ranking the best MBA programs have a "flexible" GMAT requirement—meaning they accept GMAT or GRE test scores.

While this is more common than online, part-time and executive MBA programs do not require applicants to submit GMAT scores, a substantial number of full-time programs have also omitted this requirement.

Top-ranked schools are indicative of a broader trend in MBA admission policies, a trend that began before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic but accelerated over the past two years, according to Esther Magna, a leading MBA Admissions Consultant Stacy Blackman, an MBA admissions consulting company.

Magna says top schools want to ensure diversity in their visiting groups—a diversity of both personal and professional backgrounds—and maintaining the GMAT requirement limits the types of students somewhat. But most MBA programs, especially those that are top-ranked, require students to be analytical and data-driven, she adds.

"These programs seek to attract people who can handle the quantitative gymnastics inherent in MBA programs," says Magna. "Therefore through the admissions process, it is imperative that applicants demonstrate that they can handle quantitative research."

Depending on which school they are applying to, some students may choose to submit GRE scores or take an executive assessment to prove quantitative aptitude. Meanwhile, other applicants can indicate their job experience as proof of their qualifications.

But if you're determined to avoid taking the test altogether, the below 10 schools do not require MBA applicants to submit GMAT or GRE scores.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan)

MIT Sloan allows applicants to request a test waiver and, if approved, does not require GMAT or GRE scores. However, the school notes that standardized tests "play an important role in our overall assessment process." And the average GMAT score of the appearing students in 2020 was 720.

2. University of Washington (Foster)

The University of Washington Foster School of Business does not require standardized test scores for the 2022 and 2023 full-time MBA programs for applicants who are able to demonstrate strong quantitative skills through their prior academic work or recent professional experience. Given the competitiveness of the international applicant pool, international applicants are still strongly encouraged to submit valid standardized test scores as part of the application process. 3. Michigan State University (Broad)

Michigan State University (Broad) offers a GMAT test waiver for applicants to its full-time MBA program who qualify, as Broad MBA is "looking to create an MBA class with a variety of experiences, talents, and perspectives," says the university. 9. Syracuse University (Whitman)

Syracuse University (Whitman) is offering GMAT and GRE waivers to qualifying full-time MBA applicants for the 2022 admissions cycle. The average GMAT score for the class entering 2021 was 667.

10. Case Western Reserve University (Weatherhead)

Case Western Reserve University's full-time MBA program is test-optional for incoming 2022 students. In 2020, the average GMAT score of admitted students who took the exam is 636.
